Bad Company and Obedience to Parents

Fatwa No. ( 10918 )
Q: I am an eighteen-year-old young man. Allah has granted me guidance, and all praise and thanks belong to Him, since I was about fifteen years old. Before that, I was committing sins by leaving some of the prayer times, stealing,
engaging in the secret habit, watching videos, and disobeying my parents. After Allah granted me guidance, as I mentioned, about a year and a half have passed, and I have been doing well, praise be to Allah. I maintained the prayer and abandoned stealing, the secret habit, and disobeying my parents. I took my path with committed young men who fear Allah in secret and in public. But soon my condition changed; I returned to constantly engaging in the secret habit, watching obscene films, disobeying my parents, and stealing. My father was stingy, and I was afraid of him, so my self prompted me to steal from him, and I did. I took little by little and began to distance myself from these committed young men. All these actions—engaging in the secret habit and stealing—were known only to Allah and then to me. Allah knows that I knew this was forbidden and not permissible, but I tried to stay away from it and could not. My self tempted me with some thoughts. For example, I would say: Do you think my prayer is accepted despite these actions of mine? Allah knows that I maintained all five daily prayers, and Friday after Friday. I did not even leave a single rak'ah of the tarawih prayer in Ramadan. I completed the recitation of the Noble Qur'an and fasted the month. I became unable to bear my life. Most of the time, there is a disagreement between me and my mother. I leave her for about three days or more, not speaking to her and she not speaking to me, and so on continuously over the slightest disagreement. The same is true with my father. Lying also became a trivial matter for me, after I used to hate it as one hates an enemy. I tried to get rid of it but failed,
and I failed to understand, since all my friends, my school teacher, and those around me love me. Everyone who walks with me says, "By Allah, I love you, despite the sins I commit." O honorable Shaykh, by Allah, I am in confusion about my affair. I hope from Allah, and then from you, that you will give me a satisfying answer as soon as possible. And up to this day, I am in this state. May Allah protect you.
A : It is obligatory for you to repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from the sins you have committed, along with seeking forgiveness and doing many righteous deeds, and avoiding gatherings of evil and bad company. It is also obligatory for you to be dutiful to your parents and to treat them well. It is not permissible for you to boycott them, because of the harm and undutifulness to them involved in that. May Allah guide you to the straight path and keep you away from the path of misguidance and the corrupters. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
