Question:
Our sister says about herself: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I am committed to the hijab, but my father used to reject it. I listened to my father and left it off for a short period, then I put it back on and my father’s displeasure was removed, and he did not reject it again. Please inform me: will I be held accountable for that period during which I left it off, or not?
Answer:
You must repent, and repentance wipes out what came before it, and praise be to Allah. Repentance means: regretting the past and resolving not to return to it. By doing so, you will be forgiven, if Allah wills, because the one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. You should know that there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator. Therefore, no one is to be obeyed in sin, neither a father, nor a husband, nor a ruler, nor anyone else. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani) And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mishkat al-Masabih 3696.
So if the husband says: “Reveal yourself to my brother, or my uncle, or my maternal uncle, or my daughter’s husband, or my sister’s husband, or the like of that,” do not obey him in that. Likewise, if the father says: “Reveal yourself to people, or reveal yourself to so-and-so and so-and-so,” and they are not mahrams, he is not to be obeyed. Obedience is only in what is right. The husband of your daughter’s husband is not a mahram for you if she is not your daughter. However, if she is your daughter, then her husband is a mahram for you. As for your husband’s daughter from another woman, her husband is not a mahram for you.
The point is: if the husband, or the father, or the uncle, or the brother says to the woman: “Reveal yourself,” or “Drink alcohol,” or “Use tobacco,” or the like of these sins, he is not to be obeyed in this. Neither a father, nor a husband, nor anyone else is to be obeyed in this. Obedience is only in what is right. This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Yes.
