Ways to Repel the Whispers of Satan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He also asks: What are the supplications that are recited for the purpose of getting rid of the whispers of Satan?
Answer: A person should supplicate with whatever supplications Allah has made easy for him, such as: “O Allah, protect me from Satan,” “O Allah, shield me from Satan,” “O Allah, guard me from Satan,” “O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You well,” and “O Allah, protect me from the schemes of Your enemy, Satan.” He should increase his remembrance of Allah, increase his recitation of the Qur’an, and seek refuge in Allah when the whispering occurs. If the whisperer presents it to him, he should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, even if it happens during prayer. If it overpowers him during prayer, he should spit dryly to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan three times. It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
That Uthman ibn Abi al-As al-Thaqafi complained to him about what he found of whispers in prayer, so he ordered him to spit dryly to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan while he was in prayer. He did so, and Allah removed from him what he was finding.

In summary, if a believing man or woman is afflicted with this matter, they must strive to ask Allah for safety from it, seek refuge in Allah from Satan frequently, and be diligent in fighting it so that they do not obey it, neither in prayer nor otherwise. If he performs ablution, he should be certain that he has performed it and not repeat the ablution. If he prays, he should be certain that he has prayed and not repeat the prayer. If he says the takbir, he should be certain that he has said it and not repeat the takbir, in opposition to the enemy of Allah and in combat against him.
Thus, it is obligatory for the believer to be an enemy of Satan, fighting him and combating him, not submitting to him. If Satan says to you, “You did not perform ablution, you did not pray,” and you know that you did perform ablution and pray, and you see water on your hands and know that you prayed, do not obey the enemy of Allah. Be certain that you have prayed and be certain that you have performed ablution, and do not repeat any of that. Seek refuge in Allah from the enemy of Allah, Satan. Thus, it is obligatory for the believer to be strong in the war against the enemy of Allah and in combating him, so that he does not overpower him and so that he does not harm him. For whenever Satan overpowers a person, he makes him like a madman, playing with him.
It is obligatory for the believing man and the believing woman to be cautious of the enemy of Allah, to seek refuge in Allah from his evil and his schemes, and to be strong and patient in this, so that they do not obey him in repeating a prayer, repeating an ablution, repeating the takbir, or anything else. Likewise, if he says to you, “Your garment is impure, the stain is impure, the ground you are standing on is impure, your prayer mat is such and such,” beware of obeying him in that. The enemy of Allah is lying, so seek refuge in Allah from his evil. Pray in the place where you are praying, on the prayer mat you are praying on, and on the ground you are stepping on, knowing that it is pure, unless you see with your own eyes an impurity that you stepped on while it was wet, in which case you wash your foot, and praise be to Allah. As for his whispers, such as “this ground has impurity, the bathroom has impurity, such and such,” all of this is from the enemy of Allah. Do not obey the enemy of Allah, and know that the original state is purity. This is the original state, so do not obey the enemy of Allah in anything unless you are certain, having seen it with your own eyes and witnessed it with your own eyes, so that the enemy of Allah does not overpower you. We ask Allah for safety for everyone.
The presenter: Your Eminence, the person who asked this question is the brother who asked about the four schools of jurisprudence.
The Shaykh: We ask Allah to grant us and him success in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and to protect us and him from the evil of the enemy of Allah, Satan.
