The husband's stance toward a wife whose unsuitability has become apparent to him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Before me is a lengthy letter, Your Eminence, from one of the brothers. The sender is Abbas Abd al-Fattah Shatat from the Arab Republic of Egypt, facing my direction. Our brother's letter is lengthy; in fact, its summary is: He married a young woman and believed she was of good character and religion, but it became clear to him otherwise. It also became clear to him that her family is of the worst description that can be mentioned. He mentions various things, and perhaps it is better not to mention them. I ask Your Eminence to please guide our brother, especially since he is consulting you regarding her divorce, and she has given birth to a child for him?
Answer: What we see in this case is advice. He should advise her and strive in that, guide her to good, teach her what she does not know, and advise her with what benefits her. He should also ask her awliya (close friends of Allah), if there is among them someone good, to advise her as well, or her mother, or her mother, or her sister, or her sister, or some of his other relatives or her relatives to advise her, so that she may leave what displeases him in her, and the bad character he has found fault with in her. He should strive in this and not hasten to divorce. We advise you, my brother, not to hasten in divorce, but to strive in giving advice, and to do what you can to guide her to good, or to seek the help of some of her relatives or your relatives in guiding her to good. Even if her family is in the worst state, Allah may guide her and she may differ from her family.
So you must advise her and make much of that, and not hasten, especially since you have children with her. So it is not permissible for you to hasten as long as it is possible. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah bless you. If he is harmed financially and in expenses, Your Eminence?
The Shaykh: In any case, this has a remedy. He preserves his money from her and does not give her more than what she needs. He prays for her in secret for success and guidance in his prayer and in other than his prayer. The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in secret is answered. He prays for her, strives to pray for her for rectitude, success, and guidance, and that Allah may protect her from the evil of her character which he has criticized in her. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
