Question:
We begin with the exegesis of the blessed verse in Surat al-A'raf, in the saying of the Truth — Blessed and Exalted is He — I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan: — ((O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prostration, and eat and drink, and do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who are excessive)).
Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. This verse is in the context of the verses in which Allah mentioned the attempt of Shaytan to expose the private parts of the children of Adam. He attempted with Adam (peace be upon him), and he continues to attempt with his descendants to expose their private parts. In the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, they used to expose their private parts during the circumambulation and the walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah; they would circumambulate the Ka'bah naked, saying, "We do not circumambulate in clothes in which we have disobeyed Allah." They would circumambulate naked. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: ((And when they did an indecent deed, they said, "We found our fathers doing so, and Allah has ordered us to do it." Say, "Indeed, Allah does not order immorality.")) The indecent deed here is the exposure of the private parts and nudity. ((They said, "We found our fathers doing so, and Allah has ordered us to do it." Say, "Does it befit you to attribute to Allah what you do not know? Say, "My Lord has ordered justice. So face your direction [of prayer] at every place of prostration.")) This means at every prayer. ((And face your direction [of prayer] at every place of prostration)). Until His saying, the Exalted: — ((O children of Adam)). He addressed the children of Adam: — ((O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prostration)), meaning cover your private parts at every prayer. Therefore, one of the conditions for the validity of the prayer is covering the private parts with what conceals them from the gaze, provided one is able to do so. ((Take your adornment at every place of prostration, and eat and drink)). He permitted you to eat and drink from what He provided for you. ((And do not be excessive)). He prohibited excess in clothing and excess in eating and drinking. Excess is going beyond the required limit. ((Indeed, He does not like those who are excessive)). So His saying, the Exalted: — ((Take your adornment)) means cover your private parts and wear your clothes. ((At every place of prostration)): — meaning at every prayer.
