Questions eight, nine, and ten from Fatwa number ( 21545 )
Q8: The court issues a price list for livestock according to each region and its circumstances. Many of those liable for zakah come to the worker, asking about paying the zakah on their camels, which number more than (25), in kind with sheep shares equivalent to
the value of their camel shares. For example: a person liable for zakah has (35) camels, and what is obligatory for him is a one-year-old she-camel or (800) riyals, for instance, according to the price list. He wishes to pay its zakah in kind with 2 sheep, the value of each sheep being (300) riyals, so it becomes (600) riyals and one goat worth (200) riyals, such that it equals the value of a one-year-old she-camel. Is that permissible?
A8: It is obligatory to pay the zakah of every type of wealth from its own kind, so the zakah of camels is paid in camels, and the zakah of sheep is paid in sheep, and it is not exchanged for another kind; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specified and quantified it in that manner.
