Beating orphans to correct them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 4508 )
Q: I have four orphans, and I am currently the one raising them and providing for them religiously. I treat them well and consider them like my own children, with no difference between them. However, at times they leave their lessons, along with my children, and go out to the street to play. When I return home and find them outside the house, I threaten them that they are not to go out to the street. But sometimes I beat them all. However, my intention in beating them is only to preserve their health, ensure their upbringing is good, and maintain their studies. I ask nothing but good from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good: Does this sin attach to me or not? I have two brothers who are advanced in age and have no one to support them except Allah, then me. They have no job to live from, and they reside in Buraydah with their cousins. I live in the Northern Region ( Haql ), and my job has forced me to be far from them. I went to them to bring them with me so they would be with me, but they refused and said: We will not go with you to that distant place. Now I am confused between them and my job, which is my means of living. Moreover, my salary is not enough if I divide it monthly between myself and them, but sometimes I delay sending their expenses. Does this sin attach to me from them?
Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.
A : First: There is no blame on you for beating the orphans in your care, provided that you treat them as you treat your children in kindness and guidance, and you do not burden them with what is excessively difficult for them. We ask Allah to reward you with good for your guardianship of them and your kindness to them. Second: Likewise, there is no blame on you for remaining in your job in the Northern Region, far from your two brothers, since there are those who are in your place in housing them, namely your cousins. However, you should not be short with them in what they need from the matters of this world, according to your ability, due to the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):[At-Taghabun 64:16] And you should visit them at appropriate times. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
