Fatwa number ( 7988 )
Q: I am a young man married to a righteous woman, and I have a father with a hard heart. From here I begin to explain my problem to you: I traveled from the south to the city of Riyadh four years ago, and this father of mine thinks of nothing but
material wealth. I have a mother who is advanced in age and suffering from several illnesses. My father, may Allah forgive him, has tried more than once to expel me from the house and forbid me from entering his presence as long as he is alive. The problem lies in the fact that I am a man who knows Allah and worships Him in the best manner, and I fulfill the conditions of my religion and my prayer in a way that pleases Allah, if Allah wills. I do not want to lose my father and my mother, for my religion, prayer, and worship of Allah are not completed except with their pleasure. The father cannot be pleased with me unless I send him sums of money with which he can build a house, knowing that we own a modern house with more than eight rooms, and the entire family does not exceed five members. However, I do not possess this money, and I have a family, a wife, expenses, a house, and many of the demands of this transient life that you know. My father has prevented me from taking my mother to Riyadh so that I could have her treated, knowing that he beats her day and night and says to her words that do not please Allah or the servants of Allah, and this is before Allah and His creation on every occasion and at all times. I ask you, your eminence, to respond and issue a ruling on what you see: 1 - That I borrow the amount the father wants from people and send it to him seeking his pleasure and the pleasure of Allah. 2 - That I take my mother from him without his knowledge, which is something I do not want to do. 3 - That I forget my father and my mother and ignore them, knowing that I am unable
to do any of that. I have a psychological knot in my mind from my childhood, which is when I would see my father beating my mother with a deadly beating. And – Allah is a witness to that – he would place her head between two doors of the house and pull the door onto her, knowing that he has no one else, and she is a righteous woman. Knowing that my mother has been with him for more than 35 years, and I am 24 years old, and my salary does not cover the needs of my house, my family, and the house I am renting.

A : If the situation is as you described, then you must be dutiful to your parents, treat them with kindness, and advise them to fulfill the right of Allah through prayer and the like, and through good companionship and maintaining family ties. Do not let the harm you find from your father lead you to undutifulness toward him. Do not take your mother from him without his permission, and you are not obligated to borrow money for him as long as he finds what is sufficient for him. Give him what you can from your earnings, seeking the pleasure of Allah and then his pleasure. Allah the Exalted said:
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weaknessوَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ وَهْنًا عَلَى وَهْنٍ
[Luqman 31:14]
until He said:
But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Meوَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ عَلَى أَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا وَاتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ مَنْ أَنَابَ إِلَيَّ
[Luqman 31:15]
the verse
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
