Fatwa number ( 17112 )
Q: My mother is advanced in age and suffers from hemiplegia. She was admitted to Al-Hamadi Hospital in Riyadh at our own expense, which cost 15,060 riyals. Some relatives donated money to her, and a wealthy family also made donations, may Allah reward them with good. The total amount collected was 32,700 riyals. The hospital bill of 15,060 riyals was paid from this amount. An annex was built for her to live in within the house using part of the remainder. My mother gave me permission to take the rest for my personal account and to dispose of it as I see fit. Is it permissible for me to take it or not? And is it permissible for me to continue accepting donations from Muslims for her or not? I am her agent and her son. I ask your eminence to provide a ruling.
A: The remainder of the donations for your paralyzed mother is to be set aside for her needs, and you must not dispose of it for your own benefit. You must not accept donations for your mother’s benefit except when there is a need. If you are able to spend on your mother, that is obligatory and is an act of excellence. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Isra 17:23] , and spending is part of excellence. In the authentic hadith, when Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 5 , and spending is part of dutifulness to parents. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
