The questioner : My wife is fifty-five years old. She is blind and suffers from diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and other heart problems. She must receive injections every morning and evening, and take medication throughout the day. Doctors have advised her not to fast for about four years due to the effects on her health. However, she refused, and Allah helped her to fast during that period, so she fasted, praise be to Allah. But for the past year, she has been unable to fast for the health reasons mentioned. What is your opinion on this regarding the ruling on fasting? May Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : It is obligatory for this woman, if she is unable to fast and her inability is not expected to end, to feed one poor person for every day, because this is what is required of a person who is unable to fast on a continuous basis.
As for the one who is unable to fast for a specific period and it is expected that he will be able to fast later, he should wait until he is able to do so and then make up the missed fasts, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:184].
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
