The questioner : I inform you that I am a young man who has reached the age of maturity, but I did not succeed in my studies due to special circumstances. I asked my father to help me get married and to help him, as he has money and farms. However, he is advanced in age, yet he refused my request and did not allow me to travel to look for work. I hope you will kindly guide me to the way I should proceed, and I do not want to disobey my father. My hope in you is great after Allah. May Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : We say: First, we direct our words to your father. Your father must marry you off, as long as Allah has made you wealthy and you do not have money that enables you to marry. It is obligatory upon him by the Shari'ah, and he will be held accountable before Allah for marrying you. If he does not fulfill this obligation, there is no blame on you for traveling to seek a livelihood and chastity, even if your father prevents you from doing so, because he is preventing you without right and is unjust toward you in two ways. The first is that he did not fulfill what Allah made obligatory for him regarding your marriage. The second is that he prevented you from what is your right in seeking a livelihood to attain chastity.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If the matter is as you said, that he prevented you from marrying and prevented you from traveling, there is no blame on you for traveling to seek a livelihood to attain chastity, even if that involves disobedience to him, because this disobedience does not harm you, as he has no right to prevent you.

The questioner : Thank you, may Allah reward you.
