The Ruling on What Is Known as “The Parents’ Supper”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The brother A. M. 'A. from Riyadh says in his question: We hear a lot about the parents’ supper, or that of one of them, and it has various forms. Some people hold a special supper in Ramadan and invite some workers and poor people to it. Some of them provide it for those who break their fast in the mosque. And some of them slaughter an animal and distribute it to some poor people and some of their neighbors. If this supper is permissible, what is the appropriate form for it?

A: Charity for the parents or other relatives is prescribed; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when a man asked him, saying: “Is there anything left of the dutifulness to my parents that I can do for them after their death?” He said:
Yes, you can invoke blessings on them, forgiveness for them, carry out their final instructions after their death, join ties of relationship which are dependent on them, and honour their friends.نعم الصلاة عليهما، والاستغفار لهما، وإنفاذ عهدهما من بعدهما، وإكرام صديقهما، وصلة الرحم التي لا توصل إلا بهما
Sunan Abi Dawud 5142Da'if (Al-Albani)
. And because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
the Prophet said: "Among the most dutiful of deeds is that a man nurture relations with the people his father was friends with."إن من أبر البر أن يصل الرجل أهل ودّ أبيه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1903Sahih (Darussalam)
. And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him), when a man asked him, saying: “My mother died and she did not leave a bequest. Will she get a reward if I give charity on her behalf?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Yesنعم
. And because of the generality of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
.
And there is no dispute in calling this charity the parents’ supper, or the parents’ charity, whether it is in Ramadan or otherwise. May Allah guide everyone to what pleases Him.
