Ruling on Tawaf for One Afflicted with a Serious Illness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If a person is afflicted with a serious illness, does he leave without performing Tawaf?

Answer:
No, he is carried, and Tawaf is performed with him while he is being carried.
Q: But if he is in intensive care, or something like that...?
The Shaykh: It appears, and Allah knows best, that a sacrificial animal is required of him, and it is permissible for him to leave it, just as he leaves what he is unable to do. Or it is said that nothing is required of him due to his inability; he is excused, just as the menstruating woman and the woman in post-natal bleeding are excused. This is a possibility. It is like how staying overnight in Mina is dropped for shepherds and water carriers. It may be said regarding the severely ill person who is unable to be carried for Tawaf that nothing is required of him, just as nothing is required of one who is unable to stay overnight. It may also be said that a sacrificial animal is obligatory, just as it is said regarding one who leaves the stoning of the pillars, even if he is unable, because he can appoint a proxy for that. As for Tawaf, a proxy cannot be appointed for it. Therefore, the most likely view, and Allah knows best, is that it is dropped from him if he is unable to perform Tawaf, whether by riding, walking, or being carried. If he offers a sacrifice out of precaution when he is unable to be carried, that is a matter of precaution. Otherwise, Tawaf is performed with him while he is being carried.
Q: Is this regarding Tawaf...?
The Shaykh: Tawaf al-Wada' (the Farewell Tawaf).
