Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted in the context of the hadiths in the Book of Jihad: “From Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying, "Observing Ribat in the way of Allah for a day and a night is far better than observing Saum (fasting) for a whole month and standing in Salat (prayer) in all its nights. If a person dies (while performing this duty), he will go on receiving his reward for his meritorious deeds perpetually, and he will be saved from Al- Fattan."
Riyad as-Salihin 1291
Narrated by Muslim. And from Fadalah ibn 'Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The actions of every dead person come to a halt with his death except the one who is on the frontier in Allah's way (i.e., observing Ribat). This latter's deeds will be made to go on increasing for him till the Day of Resurrection, and he will be secure from the trials in the grave.
Riyad as-Salihin 1292
Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good, authentic hadith. And from 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: `Guarding the border for one day for the sake of Allah is better than a thousand other days doing other deeds.”
Musnad Ahmad 558, 559A Hasan hadeeth] , Da\'if (Darussalam)
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good, authentic hadith. And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah guarantees that he who goes out to fight in His way believing in Him and affirming the truth of His Messenger, will either be admitted to Jannah or will be brought back to his home (safely) from where he has set out, with whatever reward or share of booty he may have gained. By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, if a person is wounded in the way of Allah, he will come on the Day of Resurrection with his wound in the same condition as it was on the day when he received it; its colour will be the colour of blood but its smell will be the smell of musk. By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, if it were not to be too hard upon the Muslims, I would not lag behind any expedition to fight in the Cause of Allah, but I have neither abundant means to provide them conveyance (horses) nor all other Muslims have it, and it will be hard on them to remain behind when I go forth (for Jihad). By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, I love to fight in the way of Allah and get killed, to fight again and get killed and to fight again and get killed."
Riyad as-Salihin 1294
Narrated by Muslim, and al-Bukhari narrated part of it.”

The Shaykh : These hadiths were cited by al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* to explain the virtue of standing guard in the cause of Allah, meaning that a person stands guard on the borders or facing the enemy in the cause of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to exalt the word of Allah, preserve the religion of Allah, and protect the Muslims. This is among the best of deeds. It has been previously mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Going out in the morning in the cause of Allah, or in the evening, is more virtuous than the world and what is in it.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 2755Sahih (Darussalam)
In these hadiths, there is evidence that the one who stands guard has his deeds continued for him until the Day of Resurrection, and that he is safe from the trial of the grave. This means that when people die and are buried, two angels come to them and ask the man about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet, except for the one who dies while standing guard in the cause of Allah, for whom the two angels do not come to ask him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) clarified the wisdom of this and said:
The flashing of the swords above his head is trial enough.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2053Sahih (Darussalam)
Thus, the martyr and the one who stands guard, neither of them is visited by the two angels in his grave to ask him, but he is safe from that. This is a great virtue and a great reward. As for the last hadith of Abu Hurayrah, it contains evidence of the virtue of being killed in the cause of Allah. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) swore that were it not that it would cause hardship upon the Muslims, he would never have stayed behind from any expedition. However, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sometimes stayed behind due to the Muslims' affairs, attending to their needs, and not causing them hardship. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also swore that he wishes and would like to be killed in the cause of Allah, then be brought back to life and killed, then be brought back to life and killed. This indicates the virtue of being killed in the cause of Allah, and there is no doubt about this. The Qur'an is clear on this matter. Allah the Exalted said:
(169) And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, (170) Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. (171) They receive good tidings of favor from Allah and bounty and [of the fact] that Allah does not allow the reward of believers to be lost - ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتًا بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون * فرحين بما آتاهم الله من فضله ويستبشرون بالذين لم يلحقوا بهم من خلفه ألا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون * يستبشرون بنعمة من الله وفضل وأن الله لا يضيع أجر المؤمنين
[Ali 'Imran 3:169-171]
This intermediate life (barzakh) is not known to us and is not like our life. For this reason, He the Exalted said:
And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.
[Al-Baqarah 2:154]
A life of which they have no knowledge. This means that if you were to open his grave, you would find the person dead, but he is alive with Allah, being provided for, eating from Paradise in the morning and evening. We ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, to grant us and you martyrdom in His cause, and to help us and you in jihad in the cause of Allah, the jihad of our own selves and the jihad against our enemies. Indeed, He is Capable of all things.
