The Ruling on Admonishing People with Fabricated Stories and Fables
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
May Allah reward you. A message was received for the program signed by a group of brothers. They say that some of the worshippers in the Dar al-Na'im district in Bur Sudan, Sudan, our brothers, say: One day in our mosque, one of the pretenders to knowledge delivered a sermon to us after leading us in the Zuhr prayer. He began speaking by saying: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lost his wife Khadijah, he slaughtered his camel for her and set up a funeral bed for her for three days. He said that this came in a hadith narrated by Qatadah the Companion. Then he cited another hadith, refusing to identify its narrator, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am a tree, and Ali is its trunk, Fatimah is its branches, and al-Hasan and al-Husayn are its fruits.
Then he cited a third hadith in which he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) encountered a Jewish man at one of the mountains of Mecca one day. He said to him: Have you not believed in me? The Jew said: No, I do not believe in you. He said to him: Call that tree. He called it, saying: Muhammad is calling you. It came to him, shading him with its branches and dragging its roots. He said to it: Who am I? It said: You are Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. The Jew then pronounced the two testimonies of faith after witnessing this miracle. Then the tree ascended to the heavens and circled the Throne, the Footstool, the Preserved Tablet, and the Pen. It asked Allah for permission to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: The Jew kissed the hand and foot of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Then he cited another story, saying: Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) found a man circumambulating the Ka'bah. He said to him: You are a fornicator. The man said: How did you know that? He said: I knew it in your eyes. The man said: I did not commit fornication, but I looked at a Jewish woman. The man said to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): Did you know that by revelation? He said: No, but it is the intuition of the believer. When we demanded evidence from him, his supporters nearly attacked us. We hope to know the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding what this man said, and about these stories which he used as admonition for the people, preferring them over other beneficial and useful admonitions. May Allah reward you with good. They concluded the message by saying: We would like our questions to be presented to the honor of Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Baz?
Answer: These reports mentioned by this preacher are all invalid, all fabricated against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and all have no basis. He did not perform a funeral rite when Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away, nor did he slaughter a camel, nor did he invite people to a funeral gathering as some people do today. All of this has no basis. May Allah be pleased with Khadijah and grant her satisfaction. He used to pray for her frequently, and at times he would slaughter a sheep and distribute it to her close friends and companions as a gift and kindness, so that he would pray for her and be kind to her through his supplication.
As for him performing a funeral rite when she died, or slaughtering a camel, or the like, all of this has no basis; it is all a lie. Likewise, his statement: (That he is a tree and Ali is its trunk...) and so on, all of this is invalid, has no basis, and is not authentic. Likewise, what was mentioned about the Jew and the tree that spoke and said: He is the Messenger of Allah, and that Allah made it speak, and that it ascended to the sky and circled the Throne, all of this has no basis; it is all invalid and all a lie from the lies of the fabricating criminals. Likewise, what is narrated about Uthman that he said to a man: You are a fornicator, and that he knew this from his eyes, all of this is invalid and has no basis of truth. And Qatadah is not a Companion but a Successor, from the Successors and not from the Companions.
The point is that these four reports are all invalid, all have no authenticity from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the fourth is not authentic from Uthman, nor is there any basis for it; rather, it is from the lies of the liars.
However, it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in other hadiths that he called some trees and they came, and this is one of the signs of prophethood. One day he wanted to relieve himself, so he called two trees and they came together, and he sat between them until he had relieved himself. Something similar came in other hadiths that he called some trees and they came to him, and this was among the signs of prophethood and the proofs of his truthfulness (peace and blessings be upon him). But this is different from the report mentioned by this fabricator, that it spoke and said: You are Muhammad. No, rather it responded to his call when he called it (peace and blessings be upon him) and it was present. As for it speaking and saying: You are Muhammad, or such, or testifying that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, or that it ascended to the sky and circled the Throne, all of this has no basis; it is all invalid.
Therefore, one should be cautious of these people, and the preacher should, when admonishing, remind people of what benefits them in their religion, from authentic hadiths, or from verses of the Qur'an. He should remind people of the Book of Allah the Exalted, and admonish them by mentioning the verses that contain admonition and reminder regarding what Allah has made obligatory and what He has forbidden. Thus, he mentions to them the authentic hadiths narrated by al-Bukhari, or narrated by Muslim, or narrated by the people of the Sunan, or others from the people of the reliable books with authentic chains. Thus, the believer, when admonishing his brothers, seeks out the authentic hadiths and seeks out the verses that contain admonition and reminder for the people. As for looking at fabricated and false reports that have no restraint or control, that is not permissible. It is not permissible to speak about them, nor is it permissible to admonish people with them. Rather, one must be cautious of them and stay away from them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:308, in the other wording: (and he knows) meaning: he knows that it is a lie, so he is one of the liars. Therefore, it is not permissible for the believer to narrate hadiths that he knows are lies, or believes are lies, or that it is most likely in his opinion that they are lies, ever. Rather, he should avoid them, except if he intends to clarify and explain that they are invalid. If he narrates them to clarify their invalidity and that they are fabricated, there is no harm. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Musnad Ahmad 469Hasan (Darussalam), so the matter is serious and great. Lying against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not like lying against others. Even though lying is vile, forbidden, and prohibited, lying against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is greater than lying against others, and is among the greatest of major sins, and among the greatest of sins and evil deeds. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.
